Yo! I’m Sian.
Designer. Graphics guru. Road trip lover.
I stoke on bold fonts, sassy words, eye-catching images – and tellin’ it like it is.
I was never the kid sitting out the front of my house on the weekends, slingin’ homemade lemonade to anyone who’d take it.
I was too busy messin’ around with the sewing machine, or painting, or doing anything that meant I got to be creative.
Fast forward a few years, and I found myself as a full newb 20-year old Kiwi expat living in Sydney, Australia. A recent graduate with a Bachelor of Media Arts (Graphic Design), I was doing the 9-5 grind + spending my days churning out work that wasn’t creatively fulfilling, while I dreamed of the ripper sunshine and possible adventures waiting outside my window — and the fact I wasn’t getting amongst it. (Which was kinda why I’d left NZ in the first place.)
It didn’t take long before I was bored AF with itchy feet, so I started a travel + lifestyle blog on the side, documenting my mini adventures and thoughts about life. I began meeting like-minded people on the interwebs, who stoked hard on my design vibes and wanted to hire me to design things for ‘em. (BINGO, mofo.)
After living the stable 9-5/freelance side-hustle double life for a while, I decided to go with the ol’ “fuck it” approach and quit my job to see if I could make a go of the freelance/self-employment thing.
That was in 2011.
And lemme’ tell ya, I’ve never looked back.
In the last 8+ years of running my business, I’ve worked with some of the best soul-driven entrepreneurs in the game, including Nisha Moodley, Stevie Says Social, Kate Byrne (Betty Means Business), and heaps more. I've also created + launched a slew of digital products, including magazines + branding courses. (‘Cause if you ain’t busy creating, you’re just wasting your time + your talents, dude.)
So, yeah, TL;DR: Design is what I do, and it’s what I’ve always done for as long as I can remember.
I fucking love it, and I stoke on using my skills to jam with people who are committed to doing things (unapologetically) on their own terms.
WANT TO KNOW WHAT MAKES GOOD AS GOLD SO DAMN, WELL… GOOD?
HERE’S A FEW THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE.
👉Good design doesn’t need to be a luxury.
Obvs, I fully believe in hiring a pro graphic designer to create custom shit that’s a 20/10 and 100% aligned for your brand — but not everyone who starts a biz is at that stage. There’s a time and place to invest in different levels of design. After 8+ years working as a designer, I get it. Sometimes, you just gotta bootstrap it and DIY ‘til you’ve got everything a little more ‘figured out’- amirite?
👉🏼You don’t need to spend forever working on your website and branding.
Look, you should defs have a site that represents you + your brand vibe, that’s a given — but it’s more important to focus on your work + what you actually DO. (Ya’ know what I mean?) Get the dope site and branding up, then get back to doing your thing.
What you're selling + putting out into the world should always be your numero uno focus - but the branding and design you use to sell that sucker also really fucking matters. And to give your biz it’s best shot? Use good design to make people pay attention.
👉🏾I just really fucking love designing Squarespace websites.
Big surprise, eh?
